SKF Lubrication Systems in the Automotive Industry

Prevent downtime with an automatic lubrication system

Automotive2026-09-21T12:57:21+00:00

One station down stops the whole line. Even if it’s just a lubrication point.

In car manufacturing, everything runs on takt time. A press line, a weld line, a skid conveyor and a paint line aren’t separate machines but one single chain — and that chain stops the moment one link falters anywhere. SKF lubrication systems deliver the right amount of lubricant at the right moment, while the line is running, so the lubrication round disappears from your tight maintenance window. Euroquip designs, installs and maintains them — from press foundation to paint-line conveyor.

56%

of premature bearing failures are caused by contamination and poor lubrication

More than half of your bearing damage is therefore a lubrication problem, not a bearing problem.

up to 33%

less lubricant consumption

By switching from manual to automatic lubrication. Less grease, precisely dosed, at the right moment.

15–20 min

per machine per maintenance cycle

That’s how long correct manual lubrication takes. On a line with thirty stations, that’s your entire shutdown window, every single cycle.

40–60%

of your maintenance costs stem from poor lubrication

While lubricants themselves account for only 2 to 3% of your operating costs. The ratio between effort and impact is rarely this lopsided.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send the data to the office automatically?2026-08-25T12:31:24+00:00

Yes, to do this, choose a Millennium 5 or Helper X display and order the corresponding Trackweight Mobile FX30 modem. Together with Ipotweb, you’ll have digital data transmission. Please note: Annual fees apply for the use of Ipotweb, the modem, and the SIM card.

Can I register customers, projects, and vehicles?2026-08-25T12:29:12+00:00

Yes, you can do that! Just make sure to choose the most comprehensive Helper X system in that case. The manual provides step-by-step instructions on how to set this up and save it to the display.

Is training necessary?2026-08-25T12:28:39+00:00

VEI’s weighing systems are very easy to operate. Of course, the more features there are, the more time it may take to get used to them. You can refer to the clear user manual or contact Euroquip for an on-site demonstration or a phone consultation.

How often should a weighing system be recalibrated or re-verified?2026-08-20T09:33:21+00:00

If you use a calibrated invoicing system, an annual legal recalibration is required. For non-calibrated systems, we also recommend an annual calibration to ensure continued accuracy. We perform these inspections for you on a regular basis.

How accurate is a mobile onboard weighing system?2026-08-20T09:32:53+00:00

When calibrated correctly, the deviation is minimal, typically around 1%. With a calibrated weighing system, the accuracy fully complies with the strict legal limits imposed by the FPS Economy / NMi / RDI for commercial invoicing.

Can I link the weighing data directly to my ERP or accounting software?2026-08-20T09:32:20+00:00

Yes. Using IPOTWEB (VEI’s cloud service), you can send all weighing data wirelessly and in real time to a central database at the office. From there, you can easily export the data to your own invoicing or ERP software.

Is the weighing system installed on-site?2026-08-20T09:32:05+00:00

Yes. The installation, adjustment, and calibration of the weighing systems are always performed on-site. We come to your construction site or business premises so that machine downtime is kept to an absolute minimum.

Does a VEI weighing system fit any brand of machine?2026-08-20T09:31:39+00:00

Yes. VEI weighing systems are brand-independent and custom-built. They are compatible with all major brands of wheel loaders, excavators, and cranes, such as Hitachi, Volvo, Caterpillar, Kubota, and Komatsu.

SKF states that poor manual lubrication causes up to 50% of all bearing failures. In a takt-time environment, that’s not a maintenance statistic but a production figure: each of those failures hits one station, and one station stops the line. That’s why, when weighing the cost of manual lubrication, SKF doesn’t put the price of grease first, but the production value per hour, the downtime cost per hour, and the time your lock-out/tag-out procedure takes before a single grease nipple has even been touched.

Your results depend on takt time, number of stations, number of lubrication points and your current lubrication practice — we map this out during a line scan.

Four levels of lubrication:
where does your line stand today?

In a car plant, lubrication practice is rarely uniform across the line. The 2004 press is serviced with a grease gun, the 2021 robot cell has a central pump, and nobody quite knows what the paint-line conveyor gets. SKF builds the four levels modularly, so you can choose per zone without replacing the rest.

Level 1 · Basic

Manual lubrication

The right tools for points you deliberately keep manual

  • SKF Lincoln 1882-E— 20 V Li-ion battery grease gun with two-speed design. SKF explicitly names automotive as one of the sectors this tool is built for.
  • SKF TLGB 21 — battery grease gun with an integrated grease meter for a precisely delivered quantity.
  • 1142 / 1151 / 1035 — manual hand grease guns.
  • LAGN 120 — grease nipple kit with 120 conical nipples.

Strengths: low investment, no installation complexity, direct control.

Limitations: In a line environment, manual lubrication runs into walls. The dosing depends on who’s doing the lubricating. It can usually only happen when the line is stopped. And the time comes straight out of your shutdown window: the LOTO (lock-out/tag-out) procedure has to start before you’ve touched a single nipple.

Level 2 · Consolidation

Semi-automatic lubrication

Bringing multiple lubrication points together into one

  • SSV / SSVD — (adjustable) progressive divider blocks in a solid block design, up to 350 bar.
  • SSVE / SSVDE / SSVC — versions with an emergency grease nipple or cross-porting, for installation in extremely tight spaces, such as inside a robot cell or press frame.
  • VPK — sectional progressive divider block.
  • Armoured, canvas, polyamide, steel lines — custom-made and, on request, pre-filled at the factory.

What it delivers: Lubrication points inside a fenced robot cell or press frame are brought together at a single central point outside the cage. Your technician doesn’t need to open the fence to lubricate. If one outlet in the system blocks, the entire block stops and the fault becomes apparent.

Ideal for: older presses, points behind a light curtain or cage. For many lines, this is the cheapest step with the biggest direct effect on the shutdown window.

Level 3 · Continuous · Most popular in automotive

Fully automatic lubrication

Lubricating while the line is running — the lubrication round disappears from your shutdown window

  • CLP / PLP Touch — compact grease pump (up to touchscreen, data logging and password protection) for small to medium-sized systems.
  • P203 / AECP / EDL1 — from heavier-duty electric pumps to convenient cartridge or booster pumps.
  • SKF MonoFlex / ProFlex — single-line or progressive systems for the robot and conveyor zones.
  • SKF CircOil — for gearboxes in presses that need to be both cooled and lubricated at the same time.
  • SMB flow restrictors and PSG divider blocks — specially configured for the extreme shocks of a press line.
  • LMC 301 / ST-1240 / ST-2240-LUB — heavy-duty system controllers with USB data logging and up to fourteen independent channels for full control over large zones.

Why this matters so much in automotive: Lubrication happens while the line is running, without interrupting takt time. The lubrication cycle is adjustable per zone: you lubricate based on cycles instead of time, the technician never has to go inside for routine lubrication (fewer lockout procedures), and it has disappeared from the critical path of scheduled shutdowns.

Level 4 · Data

Connected lubrication (SKF eLube / IoT)

See what your lubrication system is doing without stopping the line

  • CLP / PLP Smart / P253 Smart — connected pumps with time-controlled, counter-controlled or cycle-controlled modes. The counter-controlled mode is perfect for takt time: you lubricate per stroke/cycle instead of per hour.
  • Datalog controller & LMC 2 — controllers with Bluetooth pairing or fieldbus connection.
  • SKF eLube app — shows system status at a glance on your smartphone.

What you can do with it:

  • Read fill level, status and modes without entering the line or interrupting takt time.
  • Spot a blockage or an empty reservoir immediately, before the bearing or the station lets you down.
  • Share or configure settings across multiple sites by email or messaging.

Why this is relevant in automotive: On a line with dozens of stations, the question is rarely “does the lubrication system work?” but “which of the forty systems doesn’t?”. At this level you get the answer from the app instead of from a ladder behind a safety fence.

Lubrication solutions per zone in your automotive production line

A car plant isn’t organised by machine brand, but by zone: press, weld, conveyor, paint. Each zone has different requirements — load, cycle frequency, temperature or sensitivity to contamination. Below are the four zones Euroquip is asked about most often, with their critical components and the matching SKF setup.

Press line and transfer presses

Why it’s critical: the press line is the upstream bottleneck of the entire plant. High stroke frequencies, extremely heavy peak loads and often no redundancy. Bearings and gearboxes in presses need an absolutely constant, reliable oil flow.

Critical components: main shaft bearings, eccentric and crankshaft bearings, gearboxes of the main drive, slide and ram guides, couplings, tool-change carriages and transfer systems.

Indicative number of lubrication points: 60 – 250 per press. (To be validated during the line scan.)

Typical setup: An SKF CircOil oil-circulation system that cools bearings (against friction heat) and lubricates them at the same time. SMB flow restrictors split the oil flow precisely. Progressive systems (P203 and SSV/SSVD) meanwhile handle the grease-lubricated points around the press frame.

Welding and assembly robots

Why it’s critical: If one robot fails, the cell fails, and the cell is the station. But the lubrication points sit behind a fence that may only open once the cell is stopped. A five-minute lubrication round becomes a half-hour LOTO procedure.

Critical components: linear guides, spindles, rack gears, robot wrists, gripper and clamp cylinders, slew rings of tilt units and weld guns.

Indicative number of lubrication points: 10 – 40 per robot cell. In a complete line, this quickly adds up to several hundred. (To be validated during the line scan.)

Typical setup: Progressive systems with a CLP pump and compact SSVC blocks inside the cage; the pump and fill point sit safely outside the fence. For recirculating ball screws, an SKF MonoFlex single-line system is the better, finely adjustable choice.

Conveyor, skid and roller-conveyor systems

Why it’s critical: Conveyors run for hundreds of metres, up and down, and are often unreachable while in operation. One seized roller bearing halfway along doesn’t block a single station, but the rest of the belt, leaving a car body stranded in an impossible spot.

Critical components: roller and drum bearings, drive stations, sprockets, lift and lower tables, transfer stations and the conveyor chains themselves.

Indicative number of lubrication points: 50 – 400+ per conveyor section (up to 1,000 points on a single control system is possible). (To be validated during the line scan.)

Typical setup: A sectional progressive system, driven by heavy-duty multi-channel controllers such as the ST-2240-LUB (for fault-finding on a massive scale). For the chains, CLK is the standard: contactless, sprays “pitch by pitch” via a proximity sensor that detects every roller, without touching the chain itself.

Paint line and overhead conveyor: no room for error

Why it’s critical: A paint line stands or falls with the overhead conveyor through the drying oven. That chain absolutely has to be lubricated (otherwise it breaks and the paint line stops for hours), but every drop of excess that drips into the hot air stream or onto the car is straight-up paint damage.

Critical components: overhead conveyor chain (pins/rollers), trolley bearings, drive stations, switches, lift/lower stations and fans around the booths.

Indicative number of lubrication points: 2 – 8 chain lubrication stations plus 30 – 120 bearing points per conveyor run. (To be validated during the line scan.)

Typical setup: Airless oil projection (PFC or CLK) that fires microscopically targeted, “pitch by pitch” shots onto the chain. This causes no oil mist in the booth and doesn’t touch the chain (no dirt build-up). Progressive systems meanwhile handle the drive bearings.

Do you also work with large oil systems?

Do you use large volumes of oil for hydraulics, gearboxes, or circulation in your processes? Avoid unnecessary oil changes and reuse your industrial oil indefinitely, without any loss of quality.

Lubricants and diagnostic tools for car manufacturing and supply

A lubrication system is only as good as the lubricant that runs through it. In an automotive line, the difficulty rarely lies with one extreme point, but with the sheer variety: a heavy press, a lightning-fast robot wrist and an overhead conveyor through a hot drying oven each demand something completely different. Below are the building blocks Euroquip uses to bring that variety under control.

SKF LGMT 2 and LGEP 2 — the foundation of your grease range

LGMT 2: The universal, industrial all-round grease. This is the intended standard for anything with no extreme load, temperature or environmental requirement involved.

LGEP 2: Grease for heavy-duty applications with vibration and shock (such as a press frame and a positioning slew ring).

Why they work perfectly together: Both are available in 420 ml cartridges (which fit both your grease gun and your cartridge pump) and are the factory fills for the plastic lines. That makes standardisation in the automotive environment extremely fast to roll out.

SKF LGWA 2 and LGHB 2 — where the standard falls short

LGWA 2: Lithium-complex grease for peak temperatures up to 220 °C for short periods. The standard choice for fans and extraction systems (the air handling around booths and drying ovens).

LGHB 2: Extremely high-viscosity, designed for sustained heavy pressure, heat and water. It’s also exceptionally pumpable over extremely long line runs, which is a huge advantage in central lubrication systems in car manufacturing.

Hot drying-oven zone: Where the heat is continuously high (rather than peaking), we recommend SKF LGHP 2 (rated to +150 °C).

Chain oils: the lubrication technique for the paint line

Chain oil in the paint line must never, under any circumstances, contain silicones (which cause immediate cratering and paint damage on your cars). Sticky residue can also clump together and fall into the paint layer.

LHMT 68: For medium temperatures. Silicone-free and perfect for standard conveyor runs.

LHHT 250: Synthetic ester oil specifically designed for the extreme temperatures (up to 250 °C) in the drying oven. Stays virtually residue-free: no build-up, no paint damage.

  • Airless oil projection: Contactless spray (prevents applicator wear) for dry, razor-sharp lubricating films.
  • Grease injection: Drives the grease directly into the pins on very slow, heavily built trolleys.

Diagnostic and dosing tools

SKF Lincoln 1882-E: The most innovative 20V battery grease gun, combined with the TLGU-10 (which uses ultrasound to measure whether the bearing is full). Manual lubrication with the precision of a robot.

SKF TLSD: Automatic lubrication unit per point. The smart wired version only lubricates when the tool is actually moving: lubricating on production time instead of on the clock.

SKF eLube & DialSet: Software that helps you manage the exact right delivery rate and lubrication status across large lines and monitor them remotely, drastically cutting the costly LOTO procedures.

Start with the station that stops your line most often

One press station or one robot cell is enough to start. We map the lubrication points per zone, calculate what the current approach costs you each year in shutdown window, lubricant and avoidable downtime, and propose the level that pays for itself immediately.

Do you also work with large oil systems in your plant — hydraulics, gearboxes, circulation oil? Then take a look at SKF RecondOil for circular oil use.
